[23] Therein, which volitional formations (saṅkhārā) are gross, which subtle?
Unwholesome volitional formations are gross; wholesome and indeterminate volitional formations are subtle. Wholesome and unwholesome volitional formations are gross; indeterminate volitional formations are subtle. Volitional formations associated with painful feeling (dukkhā vedanā) are gross; volitional formations associated with pleasant and with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are subtle. Volitional formations associated with pleasant and painful feelings are gross; volitional formations associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling are subtle. The volitional formations of one not in attainment are gross; the volitional formations of one in attainment are subtle. Volitional formations subject to taints (sāsava) are gross; volitional formations without taints (anāsava) are subtle.
Or else, volitional formations should be seen as gross or subtle relative to those several volitional formations, compared one with another in turn.
