[24] Therein, which volitional formations (saṅkhārā) are inferior and superior?
Unwholesome volitional formations are inferior; wholesome and indeterminate (abyākata) volitional formations are superior. Wholesome and unwholesome volitional formations are inferior; indeterminate volitional formations are superior. Volitional formations associated with painful feeling (vedanā) are inferior; volitional formations associated with pleasant and with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feelings are superior. Volitional formations associated with pleasant and painful feelings are inferior; volitional formations associated with neither-painful-nor-pleasant feeling are superior. The volitional formations of one who has not entered attainment (asamāpanna) are inferior; the volitional formations of one who has entered attainment (samāpanna) are superior. Volitional formations subject to taints (āsava) are inferior; volitional formations not subject to taints are superior.
Or else, volitional formations should be seen as inferior and superior relatively, by comparing those respective volitional formations one with another.
