[349] Which phenomena (dhammā) are unwholesome (akusala)?
On the occasion when an unwholesome mind (citta) has arisen — accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā), associated with wrong view (diṭṭhigata), having as object a form (rūpa) … or a mental phenomenon (dhamma), or with reference to whatever [object] — on that occasion: with ignorance (avijjā) as condition, volitional formation (saṅkhāra); with volitional formation as condition, consciousness (viññāṇa); with consciousness as condition, name (nāma); with name as condition, the sixth sense base (chaṭṭhāyatana); with the sixth sense base as condition, contact (phassa); with contact as condition, feeling (vedanā); with feeling as condition, craving (taṇhā); with craving as condition, clinging (upādāna); with clinging as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging and death (jarāmaraṇa). Thus is the origin (samudaya) of this whole mass of suffering (dukkhakkhandha).
