[398] Which phenomena (dhammā) are indeterminate (abyākata)?
On the occasion when one develops form-sphere (rūpāvacara) jhāna that is functional (kiriya) — neither wholesome nor unwholesome, nor the result of kamma (kamma-vipāka) — a pleasant dwelling in the present life (diṭṭhadhamma-sukhavihāra), and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … enters and dwells in the first jhāna, with the earth kasiṇa (paṭhavīkasiṇa): on that occasion, with volitional formations as condition, consciousness; with consciousness as condition, name (nāma); with name as condition, the sixth sense base (chaṭṭhāyatana); with the sixth sense base as condition, contact (phassa); with contact as condition, feeling (vedanā); with feeling as condition, confidence (pasāda); with confidence as condition, resolution (adhimokkha); with resolution as condition, existence (bhava); with existence as condition, birth (jāti); with birth as condition, aging and death (jarā-maraṇa). Thus is the origin of this whole mass of suffering (dukkha).
