Abhidhammapiṭaka · Vibhaṅga · Vol. 35 · Section 450

[450] And how does a bhikkhu dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas (dhammesu dhammānupassī) externally? Here a bhikkhu, when sensual desire (kāmacchanda) is present in him, understands: "There is sensual desire in him"; or when sensual desire is absent in him, he understands: "There is no sensual desire in him." And he understands how there comes to be the arising of unarisen sensual desire; and he understands how there comes to be the abandonment of arisen sensual desire; and he understands how there comes to be the future non-arising of abandoned sensual desire. When ill will (byāpāda) is present in him … When dullness and drowsiness (thīnamiddha) are present in him … When restlessness and remorse (uddhaccakukkucca) are present in him … When doubt (vicikicchā) is present in him, he understands: "There is doubt in him"; or when doubt is absent in him, he understands: "There is no doubt in him." And he understands how there comes to be the arising of unarisen doubt; and he understands how there comes to be the abandonment of arisen doubt; and he understands how there comes to be the future non-arising of abandoned doubt. When the mindfulness factor of awakening (satisambojjhaṅga) is present in him, he understands: "There is the mindfulness factor of awakening in him"; or when the mindfulness factor of awakening is absent in him, he understands: "There is no mindfulness factor of awakening in him." And he understands how there comes to be the arising of the unarisen mindfulness factor of awakening; and he understands how there comes to be the fulfillment by development of the arisen mindfulness factor of awakening. When the investigation-of-dhammas factor of awakening (dhammavicayasambojjhaṅga) is present in him … When the energy factor of awakening (viriyasambojjhaṅga) is present in him … When the rapture factor of awakening (pītisambojjhaṅga) is present in him … When the tranquility factor of awakening (passaddhisambojjhaṅga) is present in him … When the concentration factor of awakening (samādhisambojjhaṅga) is present in him … When the equanimity factor of awakening (upekkhāsambojjhaṅga) is present in him, he understands: "There is the equanimity factor of awakening in him"; or when the equanimity factor of awakening is absent in him, he understands: "There is no equanimity factor of awakening in him." And he understands how there comes to be the arising of the unarisen equanimity factor of awakening; and he understands how there comes to be the fulfillment by development of the arisen equanimity factor of awakening. He cultivates that sign (nimitta), develops it, makes much of it, and determines it well; having cultivated that sign, developed it, made much of it, and determined it well, he directs his mind (citta) to dhammas both internally and externally.
