[449] And how does a bhikkhu dwell contemplating dhammas in dhammas internally?
Here a bhikkhu, when sensual desire (kāmacchanda) is present within, understands: "There is sensual desire within me"; or when sensual desire is not present within, he understands: "There is no sensual desire within me." And how there comes to be the arising of unarisen sensual desire — that too he understands; and how there comes to be the abandonment of arisen sensual desire — that too he understands; and how there comes to be the future non-arising of abandoned sensual desire — that too he understands.
When ill will (byāpāda) is present within … when dullness and drowsiness (thīnamiddha) are present within … when restlessness and remorse (uddhaccakukkucca) are present within … when doubt (vicikicchā) is present within, he understands: "There is doubt within me"; or when doubt is not present within, he understands: "There is no doubt within me." And how there comes to be the arising of unarisen doubt — that too he understands; and how there comes to be the abandonment of arisen doubt — that too he understands; and how there comes to be the future non-arising of abandoned doubt — that too he understands.
When the mindfulness factor of awakening (satisambojjhaṅga) is present within, he understands: "There is the mindfulness factor of awakening within me"; or when the mindfulness factor of awakening is not present within, he understands: "There is no mindfulness factor of awakening within me." And how there comes to be the arising of the unarisen mindfulness factor of awakening — that too he understands; and how there comes to be the fulfillment through development (bhāvanāpāripūri) of the arisen mindfulness factor of awakening — that too he understands.
When the investigation-of-dhammas factor of awakening (dhammavicayasambojjhaṅga) is present within … when the energy factor of awakening (viriyasambojjhaṅga) is present within … when the rapture factor of awakening (pītisambojjhaṅga) is present within … when the tranquility factor of awakening (passaddhisambojjhaṅga) is present within … when the concentration factor of awakening (samādhisambojjhaṅga) is present within … when the equanimity factor of awakening (upekkhāsambojjhaṅga) is present within, he understands: "There is the equanimity factor of awakening within me"; or when the equanimity factor of awakening is not present within, he understands: "There is no equanimity factor of awakening within me." And how there comes to be the arising of the unarisen equanimity factor of awakening — that too he understands; and how there comes to be the fulfillment through development of the arisen equanimity factor of awakening — that too he understands.
He cultivates that sign (nimitta), develops it, makes much of it, and determines it well; having cultivated that sign, developed it, made much of it, and determined it well, he directs his mind (citta) to dhammas externally.
