[538] The basis for success that is investigation (vīmaṃsiddhipāda) is a root (hetu); the three [other] bases for success (iddhipāda) are not roots. [The four bases for success] are accompanied by roots (sahetuka); [they] are associated with roots (hetusampayutta). The basis for success that is investigation is both a root and accompanied by roots; the three bases for success should not be said to be "both roots and accompanied by roots" — they are accompanied by roots but not roots. The basis for success that is investigation is both a root and associated with roots; the three bases for success should not be said to be "both roots and associated with roots" — they are associated with roots but not roots. The three bases for success are not roots but are accompanied by roots; the basis for success that is investigation should not be said to be "not a root and accompanied by roots," nor "not a root and without roots (ahetuka)."
