[563] The seven factors of awakening (bojjhaṅga): the mindfulness factor of awakening (satisambojjhaṅga) … the equanimity factor of awakening (upekkhāsambojjhaṅga). Therein, what is the mindfulness factor of awakening? Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops the supramundane (lokuttara) jhāna that leads out (niyyānika), that goes to dispersion (apacayagāmī), for the abandoning of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi), and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … attains and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — on that occasion there is contact (phassa), … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa): these phenomena (dhammā) are wholesome. Because that same supramundane wholesome jhāna has been done and has been developed, as its result (vipāka), quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … he attains and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge, which is emptiness (suññata): that which on that occasion is mindfulness (sati), recollection (anussati), … right mindfulness (sammāsati), the mindfulness factor of awakening, a path factor (maggaṅga), included in the path (maggapariyāpanna) — this is called the mindfulness factor of awakening. The remaining phenomena are associated (sampayutta) with the mindfulness factor of awakening. … The remaining phenomena are associated with the investigation-of-dhammas factor of awakening (dhammavicayasambojjhaṅga). … The remaining phenomena are associated with the energy factor of awakening (vīriyasambojjhaṅga). … The remaining phenomena are associated with the rapture factor of awakening (pītisambojjhaṅga). … The remaining phenomena are associated with the tranquility factor of awakening (passaddhisambojjhaṅga). … The remaining phenomena are associated with the concentration factor of awakening (samādhisambojjhaṅga). Therein, what is the equanimity factor of awakening? Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops the supramundane jhāna that leads out, that goes to dispersion, for the abandoning of views, for the attainment of the first stage, and, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … attains and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge — on that occasion there is contact, … there is non-distraction: these phenomena are wholesome. Because that same supramundane wholesome jhāna has been done and has been developed, as its result, quite secluded from sensual pleasures, … he attains and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge, which is emptiness: that which on that occasion is equanimity (upekkhā), observing with equanimity (upekkhanā), looking on with equanimity (ajjhupekkhanā), neutrality of mind (majjhattatā cittassa), the equanimity factor of awakening — this is called the equanimity factor of awakening. The remaining phenomena are associated with the equanimity factor of awakening. The Analysis According to Abhidhamma (Abhidhamma-bhājanīya).
