[580] The eightfold path (aṭṭhaṅgika magga): right view (sammādiṭṭhi) … right concentration (sammāsamādhi).
Therein, which is the eightfold path? Here a bhikkhu, at the time when he develops supramundane jhāna (lokuttara jhāna) — which leads out (niyyānika), which goes to dispersal (apacayagāmī) — for the abandoning of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadaṃ dandhābhiññaṃ) — at that time there is the eightfold path: right view … right concentration.
