Abhidhammapiṭaka · Vibhaṅga · Vol. 35 · Section 591

[591] The eightfold path (aṭṭhaṅgika magga): right view (sammādiṭṭhi) … right concentration (sammāsamādhi). Therein, which is the eightfold path? Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops the supramundane jhāna (lokuttara jhāna) — leading out [of the round] (niyyānika), going to diminution (apacayagāmī) — for the abandonment of views (diṭṭhigata), for the attainment of the first stage (paṭhamā bhūmi): quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge (dukkhāpaṭipadā dandhābhiññā) — on that occasion there is contact (phassa) … there is non-distraction (avikkhepa): these phenomena (dhammā) are wholesome. As the resultant (vipāka) of that same supramundane wholesome jhāna, because it has been done, has been developed: quite secluded from sensual pleasures … he enters upon and dwells in the first jhāna, of painful practice and sluggish direct knowledge, empty (suññata) — on that occasion there is the eightfold path: right view … right concentration. This is called the eightfold path. The remaining phenomena are associated (sampayutta) with the eightfold path.
