[598] [The eight path factors] are not to be abandoned by seeing (dassana); are not to be abandoned by development (bhāvanā); do not have roots to be abandoned by seeing; do not have roots to be abandoned by development. Right thought (sammāsaṅkappa) is without thought-conception (avitakka); the seven path factors may be with thought-conception (savitakka), may be without thought-conception. Right thought is with discursive thought (savicāra); the seven path factors may be with discursive thought, may be without discursive thought (avicāra). Right thought is with rapture (sappītika); the seven path factors may be with rapture, may be without rapture (appītika). Right thought is accompanied by rapture (pītisahagata); the seven path factors may be accompanied by rapture, may be not accompanied by rapture. Right thought is accompanied by pleasure (sukhasahagata); the seven path factors may be accompanied by pleasure, may be not accompanied by pleasure. Right thought is not accompanied by equanimity (upekkhāsahagata); the seven path factors may be accompanied by equanimity, may be not accompanied by equanimity. [The eight path factors] do not pertain to the sense sphere (kāmāvacara); do not pertain to the form sphere (rūpāvacara); do not pertain to the formless sphere (arūpāvacara); they are not included [in the three spheres] (apariyāpanna); they may be leading out (niyyānika), may be not leading out; may be fixed (niyata), may be not fixed; they are unsurpassed (anuttara); they are without conflict (araṇa).
