[601] "Bhikkhu": one is a bhikkhu by designation (samaññā); a bhikkhu by acknowledgment (paṭiññā); a bhikkhu because "he begs" (bhikkhati); a bhikkhu because "he is a mendicant" (bhikkhaka); a bhikkhu because "he has undertaken the practice of walking for alms (bhikkhācariya)"; a bhikkhu because "he is a wearer of the cut-up cloth"; a bhikkhu because "he breaks up evil, unwholesome phenomena (dhammā)"; a bhikkhu because of having broken up evil, unwholesome phenomena; a bhikkhu through the abandonment of defilements (kilesa) piecemeal; a bhikkhu through the abandonment of defilements without limitation; a trainee (sekha) is a bhikkhu; one beyond training (asekha) is a bhikkhu; one who is neither a trainee nor beyond training is a bhikkhu; one who is foremost (agga) is a bhikkhu; one who is excellent (bhadra) is a bhikkhu; one who is the cream (maṇḍa) is a bhikkhu; one who is the pith (sāra) is a bhikkhu; one is a bhikkhu because "he has been fully ordained by a united Saṅgha through a formal act with the motion as the fourth (ñatticatuttha-kamma), unshakeable and fit to stand."
