[602] "Pātimokkha": it is virtue (sīla), the foundation, the beginning, conduct (caraṇa), self-control (saṃyama), restraint (saṃvara), the forefront, the chief, for the attainment (samāpatti) of wholesome phenomena (dhammā).
"Restraint" (saṃvaro): bodily non-transgression, verbal non-transgression, bodily-and-verbal non-transgression.
"Restrained" (saṃvuto): he is endowed with, fully endowed with, come to, fully come to, attained to, fully attained to, and possessed of this restraint of the Pātimokkha (pātimokkhasaṃvara); therefore it is said, "restrained by the restraint of the Pātimokkha" (pātimokkhasaṃvarasaṃvuto).
