[604] "Accomplished in conduct and resort (ācāragocarasampanno)": there is conduct (ācāra); there is misconduct (anācāra). Therein, what is misconduct? Bodily transgression, verbal transgression, transgression both bodily and verbal — this is called misconduct. All unvirtuousness (dussīlya), too, is misconduct. Here someone makes his living by giving bamboo, or by giving leaves, or by giving flowers, or by giving fruits, or by giving bath powder, or by giving tooth-wood, or by flattery (pātukamyatā), or by bean-soup talk (muggasūpatā), or by fondling children (pāribhaṭyatā), or by carrying messages on foot (jaṅghapesanika), or by any one or another wrong livelihood (micchā-ājīva) condemned by the Buddha — this is called misconduct. Therein, what is conduct? Bodily non-transgression, verbal non-transgression, non-transgression both bodily and verbal — this is called conduct. All restraint through virtue (sīlasaṃvara), too, is conduct. Here someone does not make his living by giving bamboo, nor by giving leaves, nor by giving flowers, nor by giving fruits, nor by giving bath powder, nor by giving tooth-wood, nor by flattery, nor by bean-soup talk, nor by fondling children, nor by carrying messages on foot, nor by any one or another wrong livelihood condemned by the Buddha — this is called conduct. "Resort (gocara)": there is resort; there is improper resort (agocara). Therein, what is improper resort? Here someone has prostitutes as his resort, or has widows as his resort, or has old maids (thullakumārī) as his resort, or has paṇḍakas as his resort, or has bhikkhunīs as his resort, or has taverns as his resort; he dwells in company with kings, with kings' chief ministers, with sectarians (titthiya), with disciples of sectarians, in unbecoming association with householders; or again, those families that are without faith, without confidence, not like a wellspring, given to abusing and reviling, wishing harm, wishing detriment, wishing discomfort, wishing no security from bondage (yogakkhema) for bhikkhus, for bhikkhunīs, for male lay followers (upāsaka), and for female lay followers (upāsikā) — such families he associates with, frequents, and attends upon: this is called improper resort. Therein, what is resort? Here someone does not have prostitutes as his resort, does not have widows as his resort, does not have old maids as his resort, does not have paṇḍakas as his resort, does not have bhikkhunīs as his resort, does not have taverns as his resort; he does not dwell in company with kings, with kings' chief ministers, with sectarians, with disciples of sectarians, in unbecoming association with householders; or again, those families that have faith, have confidence, are like a wellspring, aglow with ochre robes, fanned by the breeze of seers coming and going, wishing good, wishing welfare, wishing comfort, wishing security from bondage for bhikkhus, for bhikkhunīs, for male lay followers, and for female lay followers — such families he associates with, frequents, and attends upon: this is called resort. Thus he is endowed with, … possessed of, this conduct and this resort; therefore he is called "accomplished in conduct and resort."
