[612] And how is a bhikkhu one who acts with clear comprehension (sampajānakārī) in going forward and in returning; one who acts with clear comprehension in looking ahead and in looking aside; one who acts with clear comprehension in bending and in stretching; one who acts with clear comprehension in bearing the outer robe (saṅghāṭi), bowl, and robes; one who acts with clear comprehension in eating, in drinking, in chewing, and in tasting; one who acts with clear comprehension in the act of defecating and urinating; one who acts with clear comprehension in walking, in standing, in sitting, in sleeping, in waking, in speaking, and in keeping silent? Here a bhikkhu, mindful (sato) and clearly comprehending (sampajāno), goes forward; mindful and clearly comprehending, he returns; mindful and clearly comprehending, he looks ahead; mindful and clearly comprehending, he looks aside; mindful and clearly comprehending, he bends; mindful and clearly comprehending, he stretches; mindful, he is one who acts with clear comprehension in bearing the outer robe, bowl, and robes; mindful, he is one who acts with clear comprehension in eating, in drinking, in chewing, and in tasting; mindful, he is one who acts with clear comprehension in the act of defecating and urinating; mindful, he is one who acts with clear comprehension in walking, in standing, in sitting, in sleeping, in waking, in speaking, and in keeping silent. "Mindful": therein, what is mindfulness (sati)? That which is mindfulness, recollection (anussati), recall (paṭissati); mindfulness, the state of remembering, the state of bearing in mind, the state of not floating away, the state of not forgetting; mindfulness, the faculty of mindfulness (satindriya), the power of mindfulness (satibala), right mindfulness (sammāsati) — this is called mindfulness. "Clearly comprehending": therein, what is clear comprehension (sampajañña)? That which is wisdom (paññā), understanding, investigation, close investigation, investigation of dhammas (dhammavicaya), discernment, discrimination, differentiation, erudition, proficiency, subtlety, lucidity, consideration, close examination, breadth, sagacity, guidance, insight (vipassanā), clear comprehension, a goad; wisdom, the faculty of wisdom (paññindriya), the power of wisdom (paññābala), wisdom as a sword, wisdom as a palace, wisdom as light, wisdom as illumination, wisdom as a lamp, wisdom as a gem; non-delusion (amoha), investigation of dhammas, right view (sammādiṭṭhi) — this is called clear comprehension. Thus with this mindfulness and with this clear comprehension he is endowed … possessed. Thus a bhikkhu, mindful and clearly comprehending, goes forward; mindful and clearly comprehending, he returns; mindful and clearly comprehending, he looks ahead; mindful and clearly comprehending, he looks aside; mindful and clearly comprehending, he bends; mindful and clearly comprehending, he stretches; mindful, he is one who acts with clear comprehension in bearing the outer robe, bowl, and robes; mindful, he is one who acts with clear comprehension in eating, in drinking, in chewing, and in tasting; mindful, he is one who acts with clear comprehension in the act of defecating and urinating; mindful, he is one who acts with clear comprehension in walking, in standing, in sitting, in sleeping, in waking, in speaking, and in keeping silent.
