[638] "Having abandoned restlessness and remorse (uddhacca-kukkucca)": there is restlessness, there is remorse.
Therein, which is restlessness (uddhacca)? That which is restlessness of the mind (citta), lack of calm, mental distraction, turmoil of the mind — this is called restlessness.
Therein, which is remorse (kukkucca)? The perception of what is allowable in what is not allowable, the perception of what is not allowable in what is allowable, the perception of what is blameworthy in what is blameless, the perception of what is blameless in what is blameworthy; any such remorse, the act of being remorseful, the state of being remorseful, regret of the mind, vexation of mind — this is called remorse.
Thus this restlessness and this remorse are calmed, stilled, allayed, ended, utterly ended, destroyed, utterly destroyed, dried up, utterly dried up, done away with; therefore it is said: "having abandoned restlessness and remorse."
