[752] Therein, what is the hindrance (nīvaraṇa) of restlessness and remorse (uddhacca-kukkucca)? There is restlessness; there is remorse.
Therein, what is restlessness? That which is restlessness of mind (citta), disquiet, distraction of mind, turmoil of mind — this is called restlessness.
Therein, what is remorse? Perceiving what is not allowable as allowable, perceiving what is allowable as not allowable, perceiving what is blameless as blameworthy, perceiving what is blameworthy as blameless; any such remorse, being remorseful, the state of remorsefulness, regret of mind, mental perplexity — this is called remorse.
Thus, this restlessness and this remorse — this is called the hindrance of restlessness and remorse.
