[652] "With thought-conception, with discursive thought" (savitakkaṃ savicāraṃ): there is thought-conception (vitakka); there is discursive thought (vicāra).
Therein, what is thought-conception?
That which is thinking (takka), thought-conception, thought (saṅkappa), fixing (appanā), firm fixing (byappanā), application of the mind (cetaso abhiniropanā), right thought (sammāsaṅkappa) — this is called thought-conception.
Therein, what is discursive thought?
That which is pondering (cāra), discursive thought, sustained pondering (anuvicāra), close pondering (upavicāra), the continuous connection of the mind (cittassa anusandhanatā), the continuous observation (anupekkhanatā) — this is called discursive thought.
Thus he is endowed with this thought-conception and this discursive thought, … possessed [of them]. Therefore it is called "with thought-conception, with discursive thought."
