[681] "With the previous disappearance of joy (somanassa) and grief (domanassa)": There is joy; there is grief.
Therein, what is joy? That which is mental comfort (sāta), mental pleasure (sukha); the comfortable, pleasant experience born of mind-contact (cetosamphassa); the comfortable, pleasant feeling (vedanā) born of mind-contact — this is called joy.
Therein, what is grief? That which is mental discomfort (asāta), mental pain (dukkha); the uncomfortable, painful experience born of mind-contact; the uncomfortable, painful feeling born of mind-contact — this is called grief.
Thus this joy and this grief have already beforehand been calmed, allayed, stilled; have disappeared, utterly disappeared; have been destroyed, utterly destroyed, dried up, utterly dried up, brought to an end. Therefore it is said: "with the previous disappearance of joy and grief."
