[720] Here a bhikkhu, on the occasion when he develops the path (magga) for rebirth in the formless realm (arūpūpapatti) and — having completely transcended the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana), with the abandoning of pleasure (sukha) and … — enters and dwells in the fourth jhāna accompanied by the perception (saññā) of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana): on that occasion there is the jhāna with two factors: equanimity (upekkhā), one-pointedness of mind (citta). This is called the fourth jhāna. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the jhāna.
