[768] Therein, what is the training rule of abstinence from the destruction of life (pāṇātipātā veramaṇī sikkhāpadaṃ)? On the occasion when a wholesome mind (citta) belonging to the sense sphere (kāmāvacara) has arisen, accompanied by joy (somanassa), associated with knowledge (ñāṇa), for one who abstains from the destruction of life — whatever on that occasion is the shunning (ārati) of the destruction of life, the refraining (virati), the abstaining (paṭivirati), the abstinence (veramaṇī), the non-performance (akiriyā), the non-doing (akaraṇa), the non-transgression (anajjhāpatti), the not overstepping of the limit (velā-anatikkama), the destruction of the causeway (setughāta) — this is called the training rule of abstinence from the destruction of life. The remaining phenomena (dhammā) are associated with the abstinence. Therein, what is the training rule of abstinence from the destruction of life? On the occasion when a wholesome mind belonging to the sense sphere has arisen, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, for one who abstains from the destruction of life — whatever on that occasion is the volition (cetanā), the intending (sañcetanā), the state of intending (sañcetayitatta) — this is called the training rule of abstinence from the destruction of life. The remaining phenomena are associated with the volition. Therein, what is the training rule of abstinence from the destruction of life? On the occasion when a wholesome mind belonging to the sense sphere has arisen, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, for one who abstains from the destruction of life — there is contact (phassa) … exertion (paggāha), non-distraction (avikkhepa): this is called the training rule of abstinence from the destruction of life. Therein, what is the training rule of abstinence from the destruction of life? On the occasion when a wholesome mind belonging to the sense sphere has arisen, accompanied by joy, associated with knowledge, with prompting (sasaṅkhārena) … accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge (ñāṇavippayutta) … accompanied by joy, dissociated from knowledge, with prompting … accompanied by equanimity (upekkhā), associated with knowledge … accompanied by equanimity, associated with knowledge, with prompting … accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge … accompanied by equanimity, dissociated from knowledge, with prompting, for one who abstains from the destruction of life — whatever on that occasion is the shunning of the destruction of life, the refraining, the abstaining, the abstinence, the non-performance, the non-doing, the non-transgression, the not overstepping of the limit, the destruction of the causeway — this is called the training rule of abstinence from the destruction of life.
