On the occasion when a wholesome (kusala) mind (citta) of the sense sphere (kāmāvacara) has arisen, accompanied by joy (somanassa), associated with knowledge (ñāṇa), in one who abstains from distilled and fermented intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness, whatever on that occasion is the avoiding (ārati) of, the desisting (virati) from, the refraining (paṭivirati) from, the abstinence from distilled and fermented intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness — the non-performance (akiriyā), the non-doing (akaraṇa), the non-offending (anajjhāpatti), the non-transgression of the limit (velā-anatikkama), the destruction of the bridge (setughāta) — this is called the training precept of abstinence from distilled and fermented intoxicants that are a basis for heedlessness.
