[838] Therein, what is wisdom (paññā) in the nine attainments of the successive dwellings (anupubbavihāra-samāpatti)?
Wisdom in the attainment (samāpatti) of the first jhāna; wisdom in the attainment of the second jhāna; wisdom in the attainment of the third jhāna; wisdom in the attainment of the fourth jhāna; wisdom in the attainment of the sphere of infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana); wisdom in the attainment of the sphere of infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana); wisdom in the attainment of the sphere of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana); wisdom in the attainment of the sphere of neither perception nor non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana); the knowledge of reviewing (paccavekkhaṇā-ñāṇa) of one who has emerged from the attainment of the cessation of perception and feeling (saññāvedayitanirodha-samāpatti) — these are wisdom in the nine attainments of the successive dwellings.
Thus is the base of knowledge (ñāṇavatthu) by way of nine.
