[862] Therein, what is intoxication (mada)? That which is intoxication, the act of being intoxicated, the state of being intoxicated; conceit (māna), the act of being conceited, the state of being conceited; loftiness, haughtiness, (flaunting oneself like) a banner, hoisting (oneself) aloft, the desire of the mind (citta) for a banner — this is called intoxication.
