[863] Therein, what is heedlessness (pamāda)?
The letting loose of the mind (citta), the repeated giving over to that letting loose, in bodily misconduct (kāya-duccarita), in verbal misconduct (vacī-duccarita), in mental misconduct (mano-duccarita), or in the five cords of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa); or, with regard to the development (bhāvanā) of wholesome phenomena (dhammā): acting without care, acting without persistence, unsteadfast action, slack conduct, the abandoning of zeal (chanda), the abandoning of the task (dhura), non-pursuit, non-development, not making much of, non-resolution, non-application, heedlessness. Any such heedlessness, being heedless, state of being heedless — this is called heedlessness.
