[901] Therein, what is wrong conceit (micchāmāna)?
Here a certain person, because of an evil sphere of work (kammāyatana), or because of an evil sphere of craft (sippāyatana), or because of an evil branch of knowledge (vijjaṭṭhāna), or because of evil learning (suta), or because of evil wit (paṭibhāṇa), or because of evil virtue (sīla), or because of evil observance (vata), or because of evil virtue-and-observance (sīlabbata), or because of an evil view (diṭṭhi), gives rise to conceit (māna) on one or another such ground (vatthu). That which is of such a kind — conceit, being conceited, the state of being conceited, loftiness, haughtiness, (flaunting) a flag, holding (oneself) aloft, the desire of the mind (citta) for a banner — this is called wrong conceit.
