[921] Therein what is unkindliness in speech (asākhalya)? That speech which is knotty, rough, bitter to others, offensive to others, bordering on anger, not conducive to concentration (samādhi) — one is a speaker of speech of such a kind. That which therein is unsmoothness of speech, unkindliness of speech, harshness of speech — this is called unkindliness in speech.
Therein what is lack of hospitality (appaṭisanthāra)? There are two kinds of hospitality (paṭisanthāra): material hospitality (āmisa-paṭisanthāra) and doctrinal hospitality (dhamma-paṭisanthāra). Here a certain person extends no hospitality, whether by material hospitality or by doctrinal hospitality — this is called lack of hospitality.
