[861] Therein, what is kindly speech (sākhalya)?
Whatever speech is knotty, rough, bitter to others, offensive to others, bordering on anger, not conducive to concentration (samādhi) — having abandoned such speech, one is a speaker of such speech as is faultless, pleasing to the ear, endearing, going to the heart, urbane, desired by many people, agreeable to many people; that which therein is smoothness of speech, kindliness of speech, non-harshness of speech — this is called kindly speech.
Therein, what is hospitality (paṭisanthāra)?
There are two hospitalities: material hospitality (āmisa-paṭisanthāra) and hospitality of the Dhamma (dhamma-paṭisanthāra). Here someone is one who extends hospitality, whether with material hospitality or with hospitality of the Dhamma. This is called hospitality.
