[926] Therein, which are the three unwholesome roots (akusalamūla)? Greed (lobha), hatred (dosa), delusion (moha). Therein, which is greed? That which is lust (rāga), infatuation, fawning, compliance, delight, delight-and-lust, infatuation of mind (citta); wanting, besottedness, holding fast; greediness, all-engrossing greediness; adherence, the mire, agitation, deception; the genetrix, the progenitress, the seamstress, the ensnarer, the current, the entangler, the thread, the spreading, the accumulator, the companion; aspiration, the conduit to existence (bhavanetti); the wood, the thicket; intimacy, affection, concern, kinship; hope, the act of hoping, the state of hoping; hope for forms, hope for sounds, hope for odors, hope for tastes, hope for tangibles, hope for gain, hope for wealth, hope for children, hope for life; hankering, hankering after, intense hankering; hankering, the act of hankering, the state of hankering; voracity, the act of voracity, the state of voracity; groveling, longing for the agreeable; unrighteous lust, inordinate greed; fondness, fond longing; wishing, yearning, intense wishing; craving for sensual pleasures (kāmataṇhā), craving for existence (bhavataṇhā), craving for non-existence (vibhavataṇhā); craving for form (rūpataṇhā), craving for the formless (arūpataṇhā), craving for cessation (nirodhataṇhā); craving for forms, craving for sounds, craving for odors, craving for tastes, craving for tangibles, craving for mental phenomena (dhammataṇhā); the flood (ogha), the yoke (yoga), the tie (gantha), clinging (upādāna); obstruction (āvaraṇa), hindrance (nīvaraṇa), covering, bondage; corruption (upakkilesa), defilement (kilesa), latent tendency (anusaya), obsession (pariyuṭṭhāna); the creeper, avarice; the root of suffering (dukkha), the source of suffering, the wellspring of suffering; Māra's snare, Māra's hook, Māra's domain; the river of craving (taṇhā), the net of craving, the leash of craving, the ocean of craving; covetousness (abhijjhā), greed, the unwholesome root — this is called greed. Therein, which is hatred? "He has done me harm" — thus resentment (āghāta) arises; "he is doing me harm" — thus resentment arises; "he will do me harm" — thus resentment arises; "he has done harm, is doing harm, will do harm to one who is dear and pleasing to me" — thus resentment arises; "he has done good, is doing good, will do good to one who is not dear and not pleasing to me" — thus resentment arises; or else resentment arises groundlessly. Whatever of such a kind is resentment of mind, repulsion, repugnance (paṭigha), antagonism; irritation, indignation, thorough indignation; hatred, animosity, thorough animosity; malevolence of mind, mental animosity; anger, the act of being angry, the state of being angry; hatred, the act of hating, the state of being hateful; malevolence, the act of being malevolent, the state of being malevolent; opposition, antagonism; ferocity, surliness; displeasure of mind — this is called hatred. Therein, which is delusion? Unknowing (aññāṇa) regarding suffering, unknowing regarding the origin (samudaya) of suffering, unknowing regarding the cessation (nirodha) of suffering, unknowing regarding the way of practice leading to the cessation of suffering; unknowing regarding the past, unknowing regarding the future, unknowing regarding both the past and the future; unknowing regarding phenomena (dhammā) dependently arisen through specific conditionality (idappaccayatā) — whatever of such a kind is unknowing, non-seeing … the bolt of ignorance (avijjā-laṅgī), delusion, the unwholesome root — this is called delusion. These are the three unwholesome roots.
