[932] Therein, which are the three fetters (saññojana)? Personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi), doubt (vicikicchā), adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa).
Therein, which is personality-view? Here an unlearned ordinary person (puthujjana) — who has not seen the noble ones, is unskilled in the Dhamma of the noble ones, is undisciplined in the Dhamma of the noble ones; who has not seen good persons (sappurisa), is unskilled in the Dhamma of good persons, is undisciplined in the Dhamma of good persons — regards form (rūpa) as self, or self as possessing form, or form as in self, or self as in form; feeling (vedanā) … perception (saññā) … volitional formations (saṅkhārā) … regards consciousness (viññāṇa) as self, or self as possessing consciousness, or consciousness as in self, or self as in consciousness: whatever view of such a kind, the resort to views (diṭṭhigata), … the perverted grasp (vipariyesaggāha) — this is called personality-view.
Therein, which is doubt? One is uncertain about the Teacher, doubts the Teacher; is uncertain about the Dhamma, doubts the Dhamma; is uncertain about the Saṅgha, doubts the Saṅgha; is uncertain about the training (sikkhā), doubts the training; is uncertain about the past (pubbanta), doubts the past; is uncertain about the future (aparanta), doubts the future; is uncertain about the past and the future, doubts the past and the future; is uncertain about phenomena (dhammā) dependently arisen through specific conditionality (idappaccayatā), doubts phenomena dependently arisen through specific conditionality: whatever uncertainty (kaṅkhā) of such a kind, the act of being uncertain, the state of being uncertain, … rigidity of mind (citta), mental perplexity — this is called doubt.
Therein, which is adherence to rules and rituals? On the part of ascetics and brahmins outside of this [dispensation]: "Purity is through rules (sīla), purity is through rituals (vata), purity is through rules and rituals" — whatever view of such a kind, the resort to views, … the perverted grasp — this is called adherence to rules and rituals.
These are the three fetters.
