[940] Therein, which are the three grounds of sectarian tenets (titthāyatana)? Here some ascetic (samaṇa) or brahmin is of such a doctrine, of such a view: 'Whatever this person (purisapuggala) experiences, whether pleasure, pain, or neither-pain-nor-pleasure, all that is caused by what was done in the past (pubbekatahetu).' But here some ascetic or brahmin is of such a doctrine, of such a view: 'Whatever this person experiences, whether pleasure, pain, or neither-pain-nor-pleasure, all that is caused by the creative act of a supreme lord (issaranimmānahetu).' But here some ascetic or brahmin is of such a doctrine, of such a view: 'Whatever this person experiences, whether pleasure, pain, or neither-pain-nor-pleasure, all that is without cause, without condition (ahetu appaccayā).' These are the three grounds of sectarian tenets.
