[939] Therein, which are the three darknesses (tama)? Regarding the past period, one doubts (kaṅkhati), is uncertain (vicikicchati), is undecided (nādhimuccati), and is not confident (na sampasīdati); regarding the future period, one doubts, is uncertain, is undecided, and is not confident; regarding the present period, one doubts, is uncertain, is undecided, and is not confident. These are the three darknesses.
