[952] Therein, what is restlessness (uddhacca)? That which is restlessness of the mind (citta), lack of calm, mental distraction, turmoil of the mind — this is called restlessness.
Therein, what is indolence (kosajja)? The letting loose of the mind — the repeated giving of it over — to bodily misconduct, to verbal misconduct, to mental misconduct, or to the five strands of sensual pleasure (kāmaguṇa); or, in the development of wholesome phenomena (dhammā), acting without earnestness, acting without persistence, acting without steadfastness, sluggish conduct, the casting off of zeal (chanda), the casting off of the task, non-pursuit, non-development, non-cultivation, non-resolution, non-application, heedlessness — this is called indolence.
Therein, what is heedlessness (pamāda)? The letting loose of the mind — the repeated giving of it over — to bodily misconduct, to verbal misconduct, to mental misconduct, or to the five strands of sensual pleasure; or, in the development of wholesome phenomena, acting without earnestness, acting without persistence, acting without steadfastness, sluggish conduct, the casting off of zeal, the casting off of the task, non-pursuit, non-development, non-cultivation, non-resolution, non-application, heedlessness. Any heedlessness of such a kind, any being heedless, any state of being heedless — this is called heedlessness.
