[982] Therein, which are the five bondages of the mind (cetaso vinibandhā)?
One is not free from lust (rāga) for sensual pleasures (kāma), not free from desire, not free from affection, not free from thirst, not free from fever, not free from craving (taṇhā); one is not free from lust for the body (kāya), not free from desire, not free from affection, not free from thirst, not free from fever, not free from craving; one is not free from lust for form (rūpa), not free from desire, not free from affection, not free from thirst, not free from fever, not free from craving; having eaten as much as one wishes, filling the belly, one dwells devoted to the pleasure of lying down, the pleasure of lolling, and the pleasure of drowsing (middha); one leads the holy life (brahmacariya) aspiring to a certain company of devas (devakāya): "By this virtue (sīla), or by this observance (vata), or by this austerity (tapa), or by this holy life, I shall become a deva or one among the devas." These are the five bondages of the mind.
