[986] Therein, which are the five enmities (verā)? The destruction of life (pāṇātipāta), the taking of what is not given (adinnādāna), misconduct in sensual pleasures (kāmesu micchācāra), false speech (musāvāda), and the taking of intoxicants—liquor and fermented drink—that are a basis for heedlessness (surāmerayamajjapamādaṭṭhāna). These are the five enmities.
