[1119] [Sakavādin:] "Dependent on the eye (cakkhu) and the earth element (paṭhavī-dhātu), eye-consciousness (cakkhu-viññāṇa) arises?" [Paravādin:] "Yes." [Sakavādin:] "Is there indeed a discourse (suttanta) that says: 'Dependent on the eye and the earth element, eye-consciousness arises'?" [Paravādin:] "There is not." [Sakavādin:] "Is there indeed a discourse that says: 'Dependent on the eye and forms (rūpa), eye-consciousness arises'?" [Paravādin:] "Yes." [Sakavādin:] "If there is indeed a discourse that says: 'Dependent on the eye and forms, eye-consciousness arises,' then truly, sir, it should not be said: 'Dependent on the eye and the earth element, eye-consciousness arises.'"
