[1140] P. Is it not to be said that giving (dāna) is a mental phenomenon (cetasiko dhammo)?

P. Is giving of undesirable fruit, of unpleasing fruit, of disagreeable fruit, of adulterated fruit, yielding suffering (dukkha), ripening in suffering?
S. It should not be said thus. …
P. Is not giving of desirable fruit, of pleasing fruit, of agreeable fruit, of unadulterated fruit, yielding happiness, ripening in happiness?
S. Yes.
P. If giving is of desirable fruit, of pleasing fruit, of agreeable fruit, of unadulterated fruit, yielding happiness, ripening in happiness, then indeed, sir, it must be said: "Giving is a mental phenomenon."
S. It was said by the Blessed One that giving is of desirable fruit; and a robe (cīvara) is a gift (dāna)?
P. Yes.
S. Is a robe of desirable fruit, of pleasing fruit, of agreeable fruit, of unadulterated fruit, yielding happiness, ripening in happiness?

S. It was said by the Blessed One that giving is of desirable fruit; and almsfood (piṇḍapāta), lodging (senāsana), and the requisite of medicines for the sick (gilānapaccayabhesajjaparikkhāra) are a gift (dāna)?
