[1308] Sakavādin: Does a fetter (saññojana) have the Deathless (amata) as its object (ārammaṇa)? Paravādin: Yes. S.: Is the Deathless subject to fetters (saññojaniya), subject to ties (ganthaniya), subject to floods (oghaniya), subject to bonds (yoganiya), subject to hindrances (nīvaraṇiya), adhered to (parāmaṭṭha), subject to clinging (upādāniya), subject to defilement (saṅkilesika)? P.: It should not be said thus. … S.: Is it not the case that the Deathless is not subject to fetters, not subject to ties, … not subject to defilement? P.: Yes. S.: If the Deathless is not subject to fetters, … not subject to defilement, then surely, good sir, it should not be said that a fetter has the Deathless as its object.
