[1731] S. Is a gift (dāna) purified only by the giver (dāyaka), not by the recipient (paṭiggāhaka)? P. Yes. S. Are there not some who, having given a gift to a Stream-Enterer (sotāpanna), make the offering (dakkhiṇā) succeed? P. Yes. S. If there are some who, having given a gift to a Stream-Enterer, make the offering succeed, then indeed it should not be said: "A gift is purified only by the giver, not by the recipient." S. Are there not some who, having given a gift to a Once-Returner (sakadāgāmī) … to a Non-Returner (anāgāmī) … to an Arahant (arahant), make the offering succeed? P. Yes. S. If there are some who, having given a gift to an Arahant, make the offering succeed, then indeed it should not be said: "A gift is purified only by the giver, not by the recipient."
