[175] [Sakavādin:] Does an arising of the person appear, does a vanishing appear, does an alteration of it while it persists appear?
[Paravādin:] Yes.
[Sakavādin:] Is the person conditioned (saṅkhata)?
[Paravādin:] It should not be said thus. …
[Sakavādin:] It was said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, there are these three characteristics of the conditioned that mark it as conditioned: of conditioned phenomena (dhammā), bhikkhus, an arising appears, a vanishing appears, an alteration of them while they persist appears."¹ An arising of the person appears, a vanishing appears, an alteration of it while it persists appears — in that case the person is conditioned.
[Sakavādin:] Is it that no arising of the person appears, no vanishing appears, no alteration of it while it persists appears?
[Paravādin:] Yes.
[Sakavādin:] Is the person unconditioned (asaṅkhata)?
[Paravādin:] It should not be said thus. …
[Sakavādin:] It was said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, there are these three characteristics of the unconditioned that mark it as unconditioned: of unconditioned phenomena, bhikkhus, no arising appears, no vanishing appears, no alteration of them while they persist appears." No arising of the person appears, no vanishing appears, no alteration of it while it persists appears — in that case the person is unconditioned.
