VaggaJhānantarikakathā

Abhidhammapiṭaka · Kathāvatthu · Vol. 37 · Section 1761

[1761] Sakavādin: Does the concentration (samādhi) that is without thought-conception (vitakka) and has only discursive thought (vicāra) exist in the interval between the two presently arisen jhānas? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: Is it not the case that, while the concentration without thought-conception, having only discursive thought, is occurring, the first jhāna has ceased and the second jhāna has not arisen? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: If, while the concentration without thought-conception, having only discursive thought, is occurring, the first jhāna has ceased and the second jhāna has not arisen, then indeed you should not say: "The concentration without thought-conception, having only discursive thought, that exists in the interval between the two presently arisen jhānas is an intermediate stage between jhānas (jhānantarikā)."
