[P.] Should it not be said: "One who has attained (samāpanno) hears sound"?
[S.] Yes.
[P.] Was not sound declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn (kaṇṭaka) to the first jhāna?
[S.] Yes.
[P.] If sound was declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to the first jhāna, then indeed, sir, it should be said: "One who has attained hears sound."
[S.] Sound was declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to the first jhāna — and one who has attained hears sound?
[P.] Yes.
[S.] Thought (vitakka) and examination (vicāra) were declared by the Blessed One to be a thorn to the second jhāna — do thought and examination then exist for that [second jhāna]?
[P.] It should not be said thus. …

[P.] Yes.
[S.] Rapture (pīti) is a thorn to the third jhāna; in-breathing and out-breathing (assāsapassāsa) are a thorn to the fourth jhāna; perception of form (rūpasaññā) is a thorn to one who has attained the base of the infinity of space (ākāsānañcāyatana); perception of the base of the infinity of space is a thorn to one who has attained the base of the infinity of consciousness (viññāṇañcāyatana); perception of the base of the infinity of consciousness is a thorn to one who has attained the base of nothingness (ākiñcaññāyatana); perception of the base of nothingness is a thorn to one who has attained the base of neither-perception-nor-non-perception (nevasaññānāsaññāyatana); perception (saññā) and feeling (vedanā) are a thorn to one who has attained the cessation of perception and feeling (saññāvedayitanirodha) — so it was declared by the Blessed One. Do perception and feeling then exist for that [one who has attained]?
[P.] It should not be said thus. …
