[1820] P. Do hell-wardens (nirayapāla) exist in the hells (niraya)?
S. Yes.
P. But was it not said by the Blessed One:
It is not Vessabhū, nor yet Pettirāja,
nor Soma, nor Yama, nor Vessavaṇa the king:
one's own deeds (kamma) slay one there,
when, driven forth from here, one has reached the world beyond (paraloka)—
and is there indeed such a discourse (suttanta)?
S. Yes.
P. If so, then there are no hell-wardens in the hells.
