Abhidhammapiṭaka · Kathāvatthu · Vol. 37 · Section 1826

[1826] Sakavādin: The path (magga) has five factors? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: Was not the path with eight factors declared by the Blessed One, namely: right view (sammādiṭṭhi) … right concentration (sammāsamādhi)? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: If the path with eight factors was declared by the Blessed One, namely: right view … right concentration, then indeed, good sir, you should not say: "The path has five factors." Sakavādin: The path has five factors? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: Was it not said by the Blessed One: "Of paths, the eightfold is the best; of truths, the four statements; of phenomena (dhammā), dispassion (virāga) is the best; and of two-footed beings, the One with Vision (cakkhumā)" — and does such a discourse (suttanta) indeed exist? Paravādin: Yes. Sakavādin: In that case, the path has eight factors.
