[185] [Sakavādin:] Is the person (puggala) apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact (sacchikaṭṭha-paramaṭṭha)?
[Paravādin:] Yes.
[Sakavādin:] Did not the bhikkhunī Vajirā say this to Māra the Evil One:
"Why do you assume 'a being' (satta)? Māra, is that your speculative view?
This is a heap of sheer formations (saṅkhāra); no being is apprehended here.
For just as, with an assemblage of parts, there is the word 'chariot,'
so, when the aggregates (khandha) exist, there is the convention 'a being.'
It is indeed only suffering (dukkha) that comes to be; suffering persists and passes away.
Apart from suffering nothing comes to be; apart from suffering nothing ceases"
— is there indeed such a discourse (suttanta)?
[Paravādin:] Yes.
[Sakavādin:] In that case, it should not be said, "The person is apprehended in the sense of a real and ultimate fact."
