Sakavādin: Did not the Venerable Sāriputta say this: "Friends, if the eye that is internal is intact but external forms do not come into range and there is no corresponding engagement [of attention], then there is as yet no manifestation of the corresponding state of consciousness. Friends, if the eye that is internal is intact and external forms come into range but there is no corresponding engagement [of attention], then there is as yet no manifestation of the corresponding state of consciousness. But when, friends, the eye that is internal is intact, and external forms come into range, and there is the corresponding engagement [of attention], then there is thus the manifestation of the corresponding state of consciousness" — is there indeed such a discourse?
Paravādin: Yes.
Sakavādin: Then indeed it should not be said that the eye base is co-arisen with eye-consciousness.
