[1880] [S.] The ear sense base (sotāyatana) … the nose sense base (ghānāyatana) … the tongue sense base (jivhāyatana) … Is the body sense base (kāyāyatana) arisen together (sahajāta) with body-consciousness (kāyaviññāṇa)?
[P.] It should not be said thus. …
[S.] Is the body sense base arisen together with body-consciousness?
[P.] Yes.
[S.] Did not the Venerable Sāriputta say this: "Friends, the internal body is intact, but external tangibles (phoṭṭhabbā) do not come into range, and there is no … Friends, the internal body is intact, and external tangibles come into range, but there is no … But when, friends, the internal body is intact, and external tangibles come into range, and there is the corresponding engagement (samannāhāra), there is thus the manifestation of the corresponding state of consciousness (viññāṇabhāva)"?¹ Does such a discourse (suttanta) indeed exist?
[P.] Yes.
[S.] Then indeed it should not be said that the body sense base is arisen together with body-consciousness.
