[283] P. (Paravādin): Should it not be said that one abandons the defilements (kilesa) part by part (odhisodhiso)?
S. (Sakavādin): Yes.
P.: But was it not said by the Blessed One:
"By degrees, little by little, moment by moment, the wise one
should remove his own impurity, as a smith the dross of silver"?¹
Is there indeed such a discourse (suttanta)?
S.: Yes.
P.: Well then, one does abandon the defilements part by part.
