[284] S. Does one abandon the defilements (kilesa) piecemeal, portion by portion (odhisodhiso)?
P. Yes.
S. But was it not said by the Blessed One:
"Together with his very attainment of vision (dassanasampadā),
three phenomena (dhammā) come to be abandoned:
personality-view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi), doubt (vicikicchita),
and whatever rules and observances (sīlabbata) there may be;
and, released from the four states of loss (apāya),
he is incapable of committing the six major wrongdoings (abhiṭhāna)" —
is there indeed such a discourse (suttanta)?
P. Yes.
S. If so, it should not be said that one abandons the defilements piecemeal, portion by portion.
