[285] S. Does one abandon the defilements (kilesa) portion by portion (odhisodhiso)?
P. Yes.
S. But was it not said by the Blessed One: "Bhikkhus, at whatever time there has arisen for the noble disciple (ariyasāvaka) the dust-free, stainless eye of the Dhamma (dhammacakkhu) — 'Whatever is subject to origination, all that is subject to cessation' — then, together with the arising of vision (dassana), bhikkhus, three fetters (saññojana) are abandoned for the noble disciple: personality view (sakkāyadiṭṭhi), doubt (vicikicchā), and adherence to rules and rituals (sīlabbataparāmāsa)"?¹ Is there indeed such a discourse (suttanta)?
P. Yes.
S. In that case, it should not be said that one abandons the defilements portion by portion.
